If you didn’t already know, I’m a fan of the show Firefly. I mean, I did name my blog My Shiny Life. I was never really a sci-fi fan but this show was my one exception. Witty dialogue, can’t-help-but-like-them characters (even Jayne), and space cowboys? That’s just a recipe for total awesomeness.
Malcolm Reynolds, Captain of the ship Serenity on Firefly, was played by Nathan Fillion. If you think you’ve seen him elsewhere, chances are, you probably have. He’s currently playing mystery writer Richard Castle on ABC’s Castle. He was also in One Life to Live, Two Guys, a Girl, and a Pizza Place and Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog.
If you’ve never seen Firefly or Castle, give them a shot. On both shows he plays characters that you just want to root for. And you also secretly hope he gets the girl. Okay, maybe it’s just me that hopes that. Either way, they’re both shows worth taking a gander at.
Beyond being on some pretty amazing shows, Nathan Fillion is also a good-doer. He, along with PJ Haarsma, co-founded the nonprofit organization called Kids Need to Read. Their mission statement is as follows: “Kids Need to Read works to create a culture of reading for children by providing inspiring books to underfunded schools, libraries, and literacy programs across the United States, especially those serving disadvantaged children.” (From kidsneedtoread.org)
If I didn’t already think Nathan Fillion was cool to begin with, then this would’ve definitely increased his cool points by about fifty.
Nathan Fillion, (nodding head) Captain, you’re freakin’ awesome.
