You know those places that make you get all nostalgic when you visit them? Well, Waiola Shave Ice is one of those places for me. It always reminds me of going to college at UH and living just off University Ave.
After a trip to the zoo with our girls and our niece, we stopped there for a refreshing dessert. I love that it’s very unassuming, tucked away down a quiet residential street in Moiliili. Parking can sometimes be a bit of a problem over there, but we really lucked out that day and scored a space just across the store. There are several benches just outside the service window, which is nice to have. Better than some other shave ice places I’ve been to where we’ve had to eat on the curb.
My husband and I shared a regular lychee and Thai tea shave ice while the girls shared a rainbow one. Both with ice cream on the bottom. And lucky for us, it didn’t melt when we reached it. Total cost: $6.00. Although the shave ice was super tasty and powdery soft, if you’re looking for the most bang for your buck shave ice, I recommend trying Mountain Magic Shave Ice in Waikele. Their portions are nearly double the size for the same price.
